The cost of bike insurance is largely due to statistics. Knowing the different factors that affect how much you pay for your insurance premium can help you save money when renewing or taking out a new policy.

Many factors can play a role in determining your insurance costs. The elements that affect how much you pay for your premium can include: type and style of bike, age and sex of the rider, bike security and bike mileage – to name but a few.

Bike insurance providers take into account the potential for theft or damage to your bike. If you show evidence that you can protect your bike from getting stolen or damaged then you can lower the cost of your insurance. Therefore, consider where you store your bike – it’s best to keep your motorcycle in a locked garage at night. Also, ensure your bike is secure with an approved security device.

Speeding convictions can lead to higher insurance costs. Insurance savings can be gained by maintaining a good driving record and avoiding any points on your license. By driving safely and cautiously you can not only maintain the condition of your bike, but also benefit from a no claims bonus when renewing your bike insurance.

If you are an experienced or older rider then it is possible to achieve discounts on your insurance. Statistics show that older bike owners tend to make fewer claims, whilst younger bike owners are a higher risk for accidents. However, young riders don’t just need to wait for nature to take its course. Riders that have passed their Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) can see a reduction in insurance premiums if they achieve a full license. Further discounts may be achieved with some bike insurers if the rider passes the Institute of Advanced Motoring’s Advanced Motorcycling Test.

Bear in mind that more powerful bikes and older bikes pose a higher risk to insurers. The type, make, style and age of the bike you own will all have an impact on the cost of your premiums and should be taken into consideration prior to purchase. The older the bike and more miles it has driven will lead to wear and tear making it more likely to break down. Likewise, high mileage each year on a newer bike can also lead to maintenance problems.

The cost of bike insurance premiums can vary widely among insurance providers. You can find great deals on bike insurance by shopping around but it’s more important to compare policies with the type of cover that best suits your needs.

These cruiser-style minibikes roared up and down Irving Street in the Middle Sunset, causing a few sensitive pedestrians to cover their ears. How wude! But it was just like The Wild One with bad boy Marlon Brando and goode girl Mary Murphy right in front of the Quickly, except in color, and with frogurt instead of beer.

Why not get one for yourself? Just 300-something bones will get you started.

You see them zooming by on the neighborhood streets and you pass it off as just some guy on a dirt bike. But then you get a closer look and realize it’s a lot smaller than the average dirt bike you’ve seen and a kid is driving it. Then you think to yourself, That’s pretty cool; I wish they had those when I was a kid.”

The truth is it only looks like a motorcycle but isn’t really one at all. It runs on batteries, hardly makes any noise, goes about 17 miles per hour and weighs just 100 pounds. It doesn’t have a clutch or any gears to worry about, and it’s a heck of a lot less expensive than a real motorcycle too at just around $399. We’re talking about the Razor Electric Motorcycle, namely the high powered Razor Dirt Rocket Electric Motocross MX650.

With one of these cool rides parked in your garage, you can zoom around your neighborhood at a fast clip while your friends pedal as fast as they can to keep up on their bicycles. With a 10-mile run range from a single charge, you can ride your Razor Electric Motorcycle for about an hour before you have to charge it again.

If money is really an issue, you can also check out the Razor Pocket Rocket Mini Electric Motorcycle, which is quite a bit smaller but also really low to the ground so you feel like you’re flying when you’re really only topping out at about 15 miles per hour. Offering 45 minutes of continuous run time, this Pocket Rocket will only cost you about $249.

And at only $230 there is yet another bike still to consider. The Razor Dirt Rocket Electric Motocross MX350, which goes upwards of 14 miles per hour and can also go about 45 minutes on a single charge. This cool Razor Electric Motorcycle weighs just 72 pounds and will run you only about $229.

Now all you need to do is get the money together and to get one. If your birthday is coming up, that’s a good option for you. If you have a paying job, then you’re in good shape there. But if neither of those is the case for you, you can always ask dear old mom and dad for a new Razor Electric Motorcycle in exchange for good grades, extensive housework, watching your little sister and so on.

Everyday we are feasting our eyes on different types of motorcycles – big, small, vintage, modern, classic and flashy.

Actually, there are three basic categories of street motorcycles – touring, cruisers and sports bikes. However, modern design can incorporate some of the qualities of the other category. Nonetheless, let us stick with the basics and discuss them one by one.

Touring motorcycles are so-named because of their equipments that are primarily designed to withstand long rides. Riders will feel comfortable even when on a protracted ride. Usually, touring bikes have hard-shell trunks on either side of the fender, windshields, full fairings, in-dash audio equipment (sometimes include GPS) and a dashboard. They also have high rounded back with armrest so that the riders will be at ease while riding. Examples of this category are Harley-Davidson’s Road King and Honda’s Gold Wing.

Cruisers and choppers on the other hand, are not that heavy as compared to touring bikes. They are sleek, beautiful, captivating and are closely related with the legendary cruisers and customized choppers. In addition, they are somewhat perceived as cool and trendy. Choppers use a frame with a front fork extended and raked beyond the standard stock cruiser. As we can observe choppers are hot once again. They are enjoying the ongoing paranoia and hype. In fact, there are featured customized cruisers and choppers that are gaining its media exposure and success.

If racing is your cup of tea, you will be highly delighted with sports bikes which are also called café racers. Sports bikes encourage a different sitting posture. The usual thing is that rider’s feet must be put in front, in a sport bike, it puts the rider’s feet underneath him. Thus, the rider’s tendency is to lean forward over the gas tank with the shoulders and the head straight. This was specifically designed to make quick and accurate turns. Sport bikes are great for nerve-racking riding adventures. Nonetheless, they are not basically used for long and steady trails. Examples of this category are Honda’s Interceptor, Yamaha’s TMAX and Ducati’s Supersport.

When it comes to off road motorcycles, they are primarily designed to be tough and sturdy. Example of this kind is dirt bikes which are designed to conquer rough, difficult and grimy treks. They usually designed with tall frames and high tailpipes so that they will not bottom out. These bikes do not have street gear or license plates. To compensate this, they are given yearly green stickers by the Department of Motor Vehicles for the owners and riders alike to ride in off-road parks.

PC Hans Monahan and PCSO Mark Braithwaite with the seized mini motorbikes (28807/3)pm PC Hans Monahan and PCSO Mark Braithwaite with the seized mini motorbikes (28807/3)pm.

Police in Calne have issued a warning that mini motorbikes used on public roads will be seized and crushed following a recent spate of complaints.

Calls from residents reporting the bikes being used on roads and pavements are becoming more frequent in Calne and police officers have found themselves with a collection of confiscated bikes that will be crushed or auctioned.

PCSO Mark Braithwaite seized a mini moto and a 110cc scrambler from two 14-year-old boys on April 12.

The seizure followed a call reporting the bikes being used in Sandpit Lane with no lights or helmets.

PC Hans Monahan said: “We received a report from a member of the public about youngsters using mini motos on the road.

“It was dark by this time so it was very unsafe for them to be riding around.

“Mark tracked them down and both bikes were seized.

“This will be crushed and will serve as a warning to others that riding these vehicles on public roads without the correct adjustments having been made and with no documents is not allowed.”

Police are reminding riders that the same laws apply to mini motos as all other vehicles, so users must be over 16, wear a helmet and have the relevant driving licence or L-plates.

The bike must also be registered with the DVLA, have a number plate, insurance and tax.

PC Monahan said: “These bikes can be used on private land but, once on a road, all the obligations of a road user apply.

“These youngsters did not have helmets and they are vulnerable.

“Mini motos are an on-going anti-social behaviour issue and police will seize them as and when they can, and offending persons will be reported accordingly.”

The 14-year-olds have both been reported for motoring offences.

In the past police officers in Calne have arrested people for driving mini motos whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Pc Monahan said: “Once on the road, normal road rules apply and you can be arrested for drink driving on a mini moto.

“These are not very safe vehicles and they also cause distress to other road users.”

Suspended AMA-SX racer to race minibikes

By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Apr. 23, 2009

AMA Supercross rider Jason Lawrence may be suspended for the remainder of the season, but he will be racing in Vegas during the during the series’ finals weekend.Lawrence has signed on to race the Maxxis MiniMotoSX at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. on May 1. The race, to be held the day before the AMA Supercross season finale, is billed as the world’s biggest minibike race.

Lawrence will race on the Brown Brothers Racing Motorsports 160cc minibike in the premier MME-12 expert 12-inch wheel class.

“While Jason’s no stranger to high level competition, we wanted to make sure he’s outfitted with the best, most competitive bike we could possibly create to line up for the MiniMotoSX,” says BBR co-founder Duane Brown. “Everything the Monster Energy/BBR Race Team and BBR Factory Team guys have access to, we’ve engineered into the #338 bike for Jason. And I think I speak for everyone not only here at BBR, but in the entire MX industry, that we can’t wait to see how Jason does against the world’s top mini bike racers in Vegas.”

As the 2008 AMA Supercross Lites West region champion, Lawrence is eligible for a bye to race in the finals, though he may choose to compete in the qualifying rounds to get better accustomed to the minibike.“Yeah, I haven’t really thought about that yet,” says Lawrence of his strategy. “I’ve got a couple mini bikes, but I’m sure they’re not nearly as fast as what BBR’s putting together for me. I’m pumped to ride it, really. Friday at the Orleans is gonna be a blast.”

AMA Racing suspended Lawrence for the remainder of the AMA Supercross season on April 20 for an on-track altercation with competitor Broc Hepler. Lawrence’s appearance at the MiniMotoSX gives the race some star power but AMA officials aren’t likely to be pleased about it.

Officials at BBR (Brown Brothers Racing) Motorsports announced that defending WSX Lites Champion, Jason Lawrence (Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy Racing) is registered and will contest the premier MME-12, or Expert 12-inch wheel class, on a “works” BBR/Monster Energy V3 Perimeter 110/160 4-Valve at the upcoming Maxxis MiniMotoSX at The Orleans Arena, Friday, May 1, in Las Vegas.

BBR, the industry leader in adult four-stroke playbike performance technology, and Lawrence got together when Lawrence showed some interest in possibly checking out the MMSX on Friday prior to the Monster Energy Supercross finals in Vegas the following day.

“I thought it’d be something fun to check out,” said Lawrence of the MMSX. “BBR was down with setting up a bike for me and I thought, ‘Yeah, let’s go for it.’”

With a free ride to the finals if he so chooses (MMSX promoters’ ruling regarding SX/MX champs racing MMSX), Lawrence can step in and, with the same amount of practice time all the other pros get on Thursday prior to the race, see if he can top the likes of defending champ – BBR’s Derek Costella. Or, if Lawrence decides to go the qualifier route, he’ll get some more saddle time on the custom number-338 BBR MM12E bike.

“Yeah, I haven’t really thought about that yet,” said Lawrence of his MMSX strategy. “I’ve got a couple mini bikes, but I’m sure they’re not nearly as fast as what BBR’s putting together for me. I’m pumped to ride it, really. Friday at the Orleans is going to be a blast.”

BBR engineers pulled no punches on creating a monster of 160cc mini for Lawrence. Check out this list of some of the goodies that went into crafting this custom bike for the defending WSX Champ:

Gas powered Scooters are making a comeback as the preferred mode of transportation.

No longer are they just for kids. Gas powered scooters are rapidly taking over as the preferred method of transportation to work and school. They are economical, can maneuver through tight spaces and with a gas scooter, you can take short-cuts that an automobile can not.

Gas powered scooters are also known as mopeds which is a two-wheeled (normally) low powered vehicle. In most states its small size and low power output allow it to escape many of the licensing, insurance, and driver restrictions placed on motorcycles. However, be careful of the true description of moped.

a. A moped is traditionally defined as a motorized 2 wheel vehicle that is part human and part motor driven. A moped has pedals so that it can be propelled by human power. As you can see, gas powered scooters do not fit most states definition of moped.

Don’t fret though, a gas scooter used properly will not get you into any trouble in most places. If used responsibly and traffic laws are obeyed, most law enforcement won’t touch you.

Gas scooters were first introduced in the mid 1950’s. The first design was little more than a bicycle with an engine mounted on it, it was called a cyclemotor. The cylcemotor can still be seen on the road these days in the form of electric bikes.

One reason some people have a gas scooter is to circumvent loosing a driver’s license. Many states don’t require a driver to have an operator’s license if they are over eighteen years of age, sixteen in some states. They also don’t require insurance and registration.

Gas powered scooters have several advantage that should be noted.

a. No parking spots required. Some gas powered scooters can fold down for easy storage right in your office, or you can tie it up at the door with the bicycles right in front of the buildings door or on the sidewalk.

b. A gas powered scooter is faster than the average electric scooter. They can travel at speeds up to thirty-five miles an hour.

c. Gas powered scooters can maneuver rather well – A gas powered scooter is a great way to move through traffic. They dart in and out between cars, especially gridlocked traffic. Imagine sleeping in an extra twenty-thirty minutes. With the time you save avoiding traffic, you can afford to. how smart are you?

d. Gas scooters have very cool body styles; some gas powered scooters look more like miniature motorcycles than scooters.

e. Gas scooters save tons of money – While the cost of gassing up gas powered scooters might seem expensive compared to the low cost of running an electric scooter, the mileage they get quickly makes up for the gallon of gas they require.

f. Maintenance is a breeze- A Gas scooter is easy to maintain. With a basic grasp of tools and a decent book about mechanics most people are able to maintain their gas powered scooters in their own garage.

The best thing about a gas scooter is the freedom to literally go just about anywhere. While you ride your scooter along the trail or the beach, you can go more places than most automobiles. Hop on your new gas scooter and get ready for a new adventure. Take a minute and smell the roses or take in the sights like never before. What more could you ask for?

A crackdown on dangerous mini-motorbikes has been launched by police in West Bromwich.

In total eight off-road mini motocross bikes have been seized by officers since the beginning of the Easter holidays less than three weeks ago.

Police in the town and across Sandwell are using special scrambler bikes to track down nuisance riders after complaints started flooding in at the beginning of the month. They will now be compiling weekly lists of hotspot areas to be targeted, after a similar campaign ran last summer.

During this period a total of 35 mini-motos were impounded after being driven illegally. The majority of these were crushed.

In 2008 police in West Bromwich took four people to court over their use of the bikes and issued 77 warnings to people using bikes illegally. A further 21 people were reported for traffic offences and six stolen bikes recovered.

Buoyed by the success of the campaign they decided to start even earlier this year. Sergeant Bob Hartill, of West Bromwich Road Policing Unit, said: “We have already started to get complaints so we started the crackdown months early.

“At the beginning of the Easter holidays we were getting 23 complaints a week, but it is now down to around 12.

“We have already seized eight bikes, issued eight Reform Act warning notices and arrested two people, with five people reported for road traffic offences.

“People may see these bikes as fun, but if they are ridden irresponsibly they can be dangerous.

“There have been deaths in other parts of the country and it needs to be made clear that misusing these machines could prove fatal.”

Sergeant Hartill said that he expects most of the mini motos seized during this summer’s campaign will be crushed.

He said: “People can claim back their bikes if they pay a fee, but relatively low value means that very few people do.”

Last year residents from West Bromwich held public meetings following problems with the bikes on local towpaths, with complaints also made about youngsters riding bikes in Victoria Street and Queen Street in Tipton.

The mini-moto bikes can reach speeds of up to 60mph and have caused deaths and serious injuries in other areas around the country.

When you first receive your brand new pocket bike you will want to take it out on the track and see what it can handle. But before you do any racing or tricks with it you first need to break it in. With every new pocket bike comes a brand new engine that is not going to be used to the speed and power that you will use it for. That is why you will break it in. There are two techniques that you can use.

Heat Cycling

In the process of heat cycling you will run your pocket bike engine right above idle for five to ten minutes. Once the time is up you will notice that the engine will be below the normal operating temperature. You will then need to shut it off and allow it to cool down.

After it is finished cooling off turn the engine back on to idle for another ten minutes before shutting it off once more. Again you will need to wait for it to cool down. Repeat this process a total of four times.

After the fourth time you can ride your bike at a slow pace until you run out of gas. Do not rev the engine or drive it at high speeds during this part of the process because it will put too much stress on your engine. Once you are out of gas you can fill her back up and you will be good to race and perform those crazy tricks you love.

Racing Break In

The racing break in method is not used very often by many people. You will start off the breaking in process by warming up the engine of your pocket bike for five minutes at idle. After the time is up bring the throttle up to where the clutch can engage. This will keep you from being thrown off the bike if and when you apply too much throttle when driving it.

Now you will be able to take the bike onto the track – but only as a test run. During the first lap take it slow. In fact take it a slow crawl. This will also help to break in the tires as well as the engine.

In the second lap you can put more pressure on the gas. Continue to ride at this easy pace for fifteen minutes. Don’t ride the bike too hard – but also make sure that you do not ride it at too slow of a pace.

If you do nothing to break in your bike then you will find yourself without one for a long time. The reason the breaking in processes are important is because they help to make sure that your engine and other pocket bike parts will not break down within the first week or month you have it. Replacing pocket bike parts is not always inexpensive so take good care of it.

POWERFUL police off-road motorbikes are being used to help tackle the scourge of nuisance riders in Halton.

Police motorcyclists have been patrolling “hot spots” across Halton, with the aim of hunting down mini-moto, quad, and scramble bike riders who break the law and make people’s lives a misery.

Police said the lighter nights of summer see a surge in people driving illegally.

Read Thursday’s Weekly News for full details of the campaign.

A MAN has been given a suspended prison sentence after being caught driving while disqualified for the third time.

Martin Alan Lambillion had two previous convictions for driving while disqualified, two convictions for driving while over the legal alcohol limit and one for failing to provide a breath specimen.

He was stopped by police on March 26 in Moor Road, Millom, after he was spotted riding a mini moto bike along a cul-de-sac and on the pavement.

Miss Lisa O’Loughlin, prosecuting, said: “A red mini moto bike with two people on it was seen on the road and on the pavement by officers on duty.

“Furness magistrates were told on Tuesday April 7 that police carried out a breath test on Mr Lambillion because he smelt of alcohol.”

Lambillion was arrested and taken to Workington police station, where police discovered he was subject to two driving bans.

They also found an amount of cannabis resin in his pocket.

Miss O’Loughlin added: “In 2000 he was disqualified for three years, in June 2006, he was convicted of excess alcohol and driving while disqualified, just one month later in July 2006 he was in court again for driving while disqualified and failing to provide a breath specimen.”

Lambillion, 32, provided a reading of 70 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit being 35.

Miss Jane Tongue, defending, said: “This was a reckless act and he accepts that. He foolishly took the mini moto into the cul-de-sac where he lives.”

Lambillion, of Queens Park, Millom, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol, driving while disqualified, riding a motorbike without protective headgear and possession of cannabis.

Lambillion, who is currently unemployed, was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 12 months, when he appeared at Furness Magistrates last Tuesday.

He was also ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work, pay £60 costs and banned from driving for five years, after which he must retake his test.

Reece Waller.
A teenager has been banned from riding bikes as part of a police crackdown on motor menaces.

Reece Waller has been served an Antisocial behaviour order (Asbo) after a year-long reign of terror in Easington Colliery.

The 16-year-old is now prohibited from riding or being a passenger on any mini-moto, quad bike or off-road motorcycle in an area the public has access to.

He is also banned from using the vehicles in a way which is likely to annoy people in either private or public.

The two-year order was brought into force this week after a hearing at Durham Family and Civil Centre and covers Easington Colliery and up to Thorpe Road in Easington Village.

It comes after concerns were raised about bikes being ridden around the Wembley and Canada areas of the colliery.

Leaflets with Waller’s picture are being sent to residents throughout the area and shops on Seaside Lane, telling them the Asbo has been served and its conditions.

It also urges them to call if they see Waller breaching the rules.

The action was taken as part of a course of action by Easington Neighbourhood Policing Team.

It launched Operation Pikespoint throughout Easington Village and Colliery, Haswell, South Hetton and Murton last autumn after bikes were used illegally on pathways, land and roads.

Since the crackdown began, 183 warning notices have been served, with more than 40 bikes crushed.

Sergeant Lyn Peart, who leads the team, said: “The fact is that this antisocial behaviour, as we have said before, is not going to be tolerated. If residents have warranted concerns, we will take action.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham Constabulary on 0345 60 60 365 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

When looking to buy a pocket bike (miniature motorcycle) be sure to do your research. You need to find reliable sales professionals, dealers, or Internet connections to make this purchase. There are many ‘knock-offs’ or imitations out there and to purchase them would be a waste of your money and time. The parts for these imitations are not typically found and in the rare event that you can find them they will be extremely costly and are typically not guaranteed. To assist you in making the best buy, talk to others that have already have a pocket bike such as a trusted friend or co-worker, your local pocket bike league, local dealers, etc. You can use the Internet to assist in you in your research as well. This will allow you a more time efficient method of comparing prices as well as obtaining information for various bikes. You will be able to compare the price of the actual bike as well as any amenities offered, allowing you to see which has the best offer. To get the most out of your pocket bike there will be a few modifications you can make on your own, and some you cannot. The most effective modification you can make to your pocket bikes will cost you a pretty penny and you won’t want to install yourself unless you happen to have a bike shop, which I know some people do. There are four major moves you could do to your bike that will turn your new toy into an incredibly powerful machine, and dangerous without proper precautions.

After you the head kit is installed, a full circle stroker crank will make your bike a 52cc. This mod is best suited to an engine with a head kit and to get maximum boost the crank must be balanced to your piston. You will need a good and experienced bike shop to do this for you. The crank will cost something between $110 and $130, plus whatever the bike shops charge. Once you have the full circle stroker crank installed you will never want to ride a bike with a half circle crank.

For even more power, you will want to allow more fuel into your engine and faster. It is time to upgrade to a four petal dual reed cage. With 2 dual reed sections allowing for 4 reeds, this gives you improved fuel flow and power throughout low, mid and top end. You will not be disappointed and this mod can be had for approximately $120 to $200.

With a headkit and a good carb, your next step up is a handmade Italian race exhaust—the Zocchi CAG Race Pipe. For anywhere from $160 to $200 you will feel the difference in the power increase from low, mid and top end.

You are going to need a bike shop with whom you trust and who understands the vision you have for the future of your pocket bike experience. With proper porting and tuning, you can get the modifications to work in perfect harmony with your engine. With all some lesser remaining mods and a timing key, you can easily add about 15mph to what stock pocket bikes could do out of the box.
